The World of Talestria

A guide to the First Dream — its regions, its magic, and the forces that shape it

What Is Talestria?

Talestria is the First Dream — the original world spoken into being by the Great Narrator at the beginning of all things. It is a land where talking animals build cozy villages in enchanted forests, inventors craft clockwork trees that tick with living magic, and the very rivers glow with pure imagination. Every creature here has a story, and that story is the source of their power.

Magic in Talestria is inseparable from identity. A fox's cunning is not just personality — it is her Echo, a spark of ancient storylight woven into her nature at the moment she was dreamed into being. To know who you are is to know the shape of your power.

The Origin

Before Talestria, there was nothing — just a vast, warm silence, like the moment before someone opens a beloved book for the first time. In that silence was the Great Narrator.

The Great Narrator spoke three words:

  1. Light — The Storystreams blazed into being: rivers of golden radiance with no land to flow through yet, already singing.
  2. Land — Talestria rose from the light. Mountains pushed skyward, valleys settled like cupped hands, forests unfurled like ferns at dawn.
  3. Life — Every creature came into being, each carrying an Echo — a spark of storylight shaped around their deepest nature.

Then one more word: Remember. The Keepers of Talestria arose — ancient spirits of memory and purpose, given one task: protect the Storystreams and ensure no story is ever lost.

The Storystreams

Weaving through every region like glowing veins of light are the Storystreams — rivers of pure imagination that connect all of Talestria. You can see them at dawn, blazing gold and silver. You can hear them at night, a low, musical hum.

When creatures dream, their imaginations rise into the Storystreams, adding new color and possibility. Stories travel the Streams like leaves on a river. The Keepers watch over them to ensure nothing poisons their flow.

If the Storystreams are corrupted or silenced, the regions they touch begin to go gray — colors fade, music stops, and creatures start to forget who they are. This is the first sign that the Unwritten is near.

The Great Narrator

The Great Narrator is the loving, mysterious creator of Talestria. No creature has seen the Great Narrator's face, but every creature knows the Great Narrator is real the way you know a warm hearth is real when you step in from the cold.

The oldest texts describe the Great Narrator as: the First Author, the Voice Before the Word, the One Who Loved the World Into Being. The Great Narrator is warm, creative, patient, and present — lives in the hum of the Storystreams, in the warmth of each creature's Echo.

The Great Narrator never forces choices. Stories are powerful because they are freely chosen. Occasionally, in moments of great need, creatures report hearing a voice — not loud, not frightening, but warm. Like someone reading aloud from their favorite book.

The Unwritten

The Unwritten is not a monster with a name and a lair. It is a spreading forgetting — a dark infection that makes creatures lose their story, their identity, and themselves. It crept in from the spaces between stories: the silences where imagination fails, where hope runs dry.

Three Stages of Corruption

  1. First Marks — Small black ink-stain marks appear. The creature seems distracted, less like itself. Echo flickers.
  2. Scales Grow — Marks harden into dragon-like obsidian scales. Eyes go dim. Memory of identity is mostly lost; creature becomes hostile.
  3. Full Corruption — Entirely armored in dark scales. Does not respond to name. Attacks from confused fear. The real creature is still inside, waiting.
Heroes don't destroy corrupted creatures — they liberate them. When all Darkness Points are broken, the scales shatter, the creature's eyes clear, and they remember who they are. Liberation always succeeds.

The Eight Regions

Talestria is divided into eight great regions, each a distinct world of its own, all connected by the Storystreams.

🌲

Whimsy Woods

A lush, ancient forest where hollow-trunked trees resonate with Storystream currents, producing harmonic tones that change with the season. Flowers release tiny air puffs that sound like soft laughter. Home to rabbits, pandas, foxes, and woodland spirits.

Locations: Puddlebrook Village, Bloomtail's Garden, the Whispering Thorns
Unwritten threat: Steals music and resonance — the first sign is silence where there should be song.

Marshmallow Peaks

A mountain range of cream-colored mineral snow and amber ice. Geothermal Storystream vents fill the air with warm spiced mineral scent. Cold but cozy — the caverns glow from within.

Locations: Frostfang Caverns, Syrup Falls, Yeti Lodge, the Frozen Heart Temple
Unwritten threat: Corrupts warmth into biting cold — the cozy caverns become freezing traps.

Gear Grove

A forest of towering clockwork trees powered by magic and invention. Steam vents hiss between roots of metal and moss. Smells of machine oil and possibility.

Locations: The Great Clocktree, Gearrick's Workshop, the Sprocket Market, the Rusted Forge
Unwritten threat: Corrupts invention into mindless destruction — gadgets malfunction, gears grind.

Crystal Coast

A sunlit shoreline above glowing coral reefs. Glass-blue water. The sea holds ancient songs and gentle giants called Starwhales who carry stories across the deep.

Locations: Glittering Grotto, Coral Bay, the Starwhale Sanctuary, Lumina Lagoons
Unwritten threat: Dims the coral glow and silences the sea-songs — water turns murky.

Shadow Marsh

A misty, firefly-lit swamp where old echoes whisper from between the reeds. Mysterious but not evil — just old and full of forgotten things waiting to be found again.

Locations: Mistwhisper Hollow, Echo Pond, the Ruins of Murmurveil
Unwritten threat: Amplifies forgetting — already a place of old memories, corruption makes them vanish entirely.

Starbright Tower

A crystalline spire that reaches toward the stars. A beacon of arcane energy visible from everywhere in Talestria. The astronomers here chart the health of the whole world.

Locations: Observatory of Luma, Celestial Gardens, Hall of Echoes
Unwritten threat: Dims the stars — when Starbright Tower is threatened, hope dims across all of Talestria.

Honey Hollow

A golden meadow where amber mineral streams wind through wildflower fields. The warmest, most welcoming corner of Talestria, where bees keep diplomatic courts and unicorns roam.

Locations: The Golden Hive, Honeydew's Potion Parlor, the Sweet Stream Bridge
Unwritten threat: Turns warmth bitter — the golden streams darken and the flowers wilt.

Not just rivers but a region unto themselves — the living connective tissue of Talestria. Pure imagination made visible. Where all stories meet and all Dreams are connected.

Locations: Bridge of Dreams, Whisperflow Falls, the Tale Nexus
Unwritten threat: The highest-stakes target — corruption here ripples through every Dream in the multiverse.

The Tone of Talestria

Talestria is built on three truths:

  1. Whimsy with Wonder — The world is magical and joyful, full of strange wonders and adventures that begin with “I wonder what's over that hill.”
  2. Mystery Beneath the Surface — Under every beautiful meadow is a forgotten ruin. Behind every friendly face is an untold story. The world rewards curiosity.
  3. Courage Through Kindness — Even the most dangerous foe might just be a frightened creature who has forgotten who they are. True heroes don't just fight — they listen.
