Hope Tokens

Key Concept: Hope Tokens turn emotional courage into actual gameplay power. Every time a hero acts bravely, encourages a friend, or brings joy and creativity to the table, the world notices β€” and gives something back.

What Are Hope Tokens?

Hope Tokens are small physical tokens (coins, stones, acorns β€” whatever the table decides to use) that represent a hero's inner courage, warmth, and spirit. They are earned through roleplay and story, and spent for meaningful mechanical advantages at exactly the right moments.

A hero can hold a maximum of 5 Hope Tokens at any time. Tokens not spent carry forward between sessions β€” they belong to the hero, not the encounter.

Hope is not something you use up. It accumulates. And when you need it most, it is there.

Earning Hope Tokens

The narrator awards 1 Hope Token when a player does any of the following:

TriggerExample
Brave roleplayActing courageously despite a Fear Mark, charging forward when scared
Creative thinkingA clever idea that changes how a problem gets solved
Encouraging a friendCheering on another hero, speaking up for them, defending them
Dramatic Spirit successRolling a powerful Hold Fast at a critical moment
Freeing a corrupted creatureBreaking all DP and liberating something from The Unwritten
Heroic story momentDoing something genuinely brave, funny, or moving in the narrative
Acts of kindnessHelping someone who isn't in the party, showing mercy, sharing resources

Narrator Tip: Don't overthink it. If a player does something at the table that makes the whole group feel something β€” courage, laughter, warmth, or wonder β€” that's a Hope Token moment.

Spending Hope Tokens

A hero can spend 1 Hope Token at any time (including on another player's turn) to do one of the following:

SpendEffect
Reroll any defensive rollRoll Hold Fast, Brace, Dodge, Endure, Sense, or See Through again β€” take the new result
Remove 1 Shadow SpeckShake off a layer of fear β€” immediately remove 1 Shadow Speck from yourself
+2 to any rollAdd +2 to any roll you make this turn, before or after the result
Boost an ally's rollGive +2 to any roll an ally is making right now
+1 to a DP-breaking rollAdd +1 to the roll for a DP-breaking ability this round β€” your courage helps crack the corruption

Key Concept: Hope Tokens can be spent on the fly β€” you don't have to declare them in advance. See a roll that matters? Spend a token. That's what they're for.

Hope Tokens and the Warm Stat

Heroes with high Warm are naturally in tune with the emotional current of the group. The following optional rules deepen the connection between Warm and Hope Tokens:

  • A hero with Warm +2 or higher earns a Hope Token whenever they successfully use Hold Fast in a dramatically important moment (narrator's call)
  • Calling abilities that use Warm (Songweaver, Guardian, Keeper) may have specific interactions noted in their Calling files

The Hope Economy

Hope Tokens create a positive feedback loop at the table:

Play bravely or kindly β†’ earn a token
         ↓
Token gives power at a critical moment
         ↓
That power creates a dramatic story moment
         ↓
Dramatic story moment earns more tokens

This is intentional. Tales & Tails rewards the kind of player that makes the game more fun for everyone.

Physical Tokens

At a real table, use any small physical object to represent Hope Tokens β€” glass beads, acorns, coins, small stones, candy, stickers. The tangibility matters. When a hero earns one, place it in front of them. When they spend one, return it to the center. The pile in the center shows how much courage the group has given back to the world.
