Crystal Coast Bestiary
"Beneath the glass-blue water, coral reefs glow with a thousand colors β and the creatures who live here carry that same light, until it is taken from them."
This file contains all 5 creatures of Crystal Coast, ranging from the tiniest healing sprite to the most majestic being in all of Talestria. The sea holds great wonder β and great responsibility.
Coral Sprite
Fey β Crystal Coast
"Tiny sea spirits that glow like bubbles in sunlight."
HP: 12 | Dodge: 11 | Mettle: 0 | Corrupted DP: 2 | Attack Bonus: +2
Attack
Splash (1d6 bludgeoning) β A concentrated jet of water that hits with surprising force.
Special Ability
Tide Heal β The Coral Sprite releases a pulse of warm ocean magic, restoring health to nearby aquatic creatures. (Heals one aquatic-type creature or willing player for 1d6 HP; once per battle)
Weakness
Poison β Poison undoes the Sprite's coral magic and causes its glow to fade.
Loot
Pearl Dust
Corrupted Form
When touched by The Unwritten: Black marks bloom across the Coral Sprite's luminous body like spreading algae. Dark scales crust along its fins and hands. Its warm golden glow shifts to a cold, deep violet. Behavior: The healing instinct sours. The Coral Sprite now gravitates toward wounded creatures not to help them, but to drain their remaining strength. Attack: Tide Heal inverts to Tide Drain β deals 1d6 necrotic damage to a target (no save), and the sprite regains that many HP. Defeating the corruption frees them.
Shellback Turtle
Beast β Crystal Coast
"A wise sea turtle who naps through most battles."
HP: 22 | Dodge: 16 | Mettle: 1 | Corrupted DP: 4 | Attack Bonus: +3
Attack
Shell Slam (1d8 bludgeoning) β A slow but decisive swing of an ancient, barnacle-encrusted shell.
Special Ability
Shell Deflection β The Shellback Turtle catches ranged attacks on its massive shell, redirecting them harmlessly. (Reflects 1d4 damage back to the ranged attacker; passive, triggers on every ranged hit)
Weakness
Lightning β Conducts through the wet shell directly.
Loot
Shell Fragment
Corrupted Form
When touched by The Unwritten: Black marks trace along the Shellback Turtle's shell like dark tide lines. Jagged dark scales grow from the shell's edges, turning the once-smooth dome into a weapon. Its eyes, slow and wise, become sharp and hostile. Behavior: The napping turtle becomes a mobile battering ram. It no longer waits for the battle to come to it β it charges slowly but powerfully, and its Shell Deflection makes ranged combat punishing. Attack: Shell Deflection now returns full damage (not 1d4 β the attacker takes their own roll back), and Shell Slam also knocks targets prone on a failed DC 13 STR save. Defeating the corruption frees them.
Driftfin Shark
Beast β Crystal Coast
"A sleek predator who guards the coral coves."
HP: 20 | Dodge: 13 | Mettle: 1 | Corrupted DP: 4 | Attack Bonus: +4
Attack
Bite (1d8 piercing) β A powerful, efficient snap with serrated teeth.
Special Ability
Burst Strike β The Driftfin Shark launches itself fully out of the water and crashes down on a target for a surprise attack. (Deals 2d8 piercing damage; target must succeed on DC 13 AGI save or be knocked prone; usable only in or adjacent to water; once per battle)
Weakness
Thunder β Sound waves disrupt its lateral line sensory system.
Loot
Sharp Tooth
Corrupted Form
When touched by The Unwritten: Black marks ridge along the Driftfin Shark's dorsal fin, spreading down its flanks. Dark scales cluster around its jaw and gills. Its eyes, once alert and calculating, turn a blank, hunger-driven black. Behavior: The shark abandons its guardian role and enters a frenzy. It circles constantly, never resting, targeting the nearest moving creature with relentless focus. Attack: Burst Strike becomes available every 2 rounds, and Bite gains the Bleed condition β targets who fail a DC 12 CON save take 1d4 piercing damage at the start of each of their turns until they use an Action to stop the bleeding. Defeating the corruption frees them.
Phantom Jelly
Spirit β Crystal Coast
"A drifting ghost jellyfish that shines with forgotten memories."
HP: 14 | Dodge: 11 | Mettle: 0 | Corrupted DP: 3 | Attack Bonus: +2
Attack
Zap Tentacle (1d6 lightning) β A gentle but shocking brush of luminous tentacles.
Special Ability
Ghost Drift β The Phantom Jelly phases into an intangible state, becoming immune to physical attacks for one round. (Once per battle as a reaction when targeted by a melee or ranged attack)
Weakness
Cold β Cold solidifies its ghostly form, preventing it from phasing.
Loot
Glow Jelly
Corrupted Form
When touched by The Unwritten: Black marks seep through the Phantom Jelly's translucent body like ink in water, swirling with strange patterns. Dark scales materialize along its bell and tentacle edges. The forgotten memories it carries shift from warm to haunting. Behavior: The Phantom Jelly multiplies its ghost-drifting, phasing in and out constantly and striking from directions players can't anticipate. It seems drawn to the sadness of those it touches. Attack: Ghost Drift now lasts 2 rounds and can trigger twice per battle, and while intangible the jelly can still attack with Zap Tentacle as a bonus action. Defeating the corruption frees them.
Starwhale
Celestial β Crystal Coast
"A majestic whale that swims through both ocean and sky."
HP: 40 | Dodge: 15 | Mettle: 2 | Corrupted DP: 6 (+4 second pool) | Attack Bonus: +6
Attack
Cosmic Wave (3d8 radiant) β An enormous sweep of glowing starlit water that crashes over everything in its path.
Special Ability
Starlight Aura β The Starwhale radiates healing celestial energy. (All allies within 30 ft regain 1d6 HP at the start of each of the Starwhale's turns; passive)
Weakness
Dark β Dark damage disrupts the starlight that sustains the Starwhale's aura and form.
Loot
Starlight Tear
Corrupted Form
When touched by The Unwritten: This is the most serious corruption in Talestria's oceans. Black marks first appear on the Starwhale's flukes β small, easy to miss. Then they spread like a shadow crossing the moon. Massive dark scales emerge along its flanks, each one as large as a door. The glow of its skin dims from warm gold to cold, deep purple-black. The stars visible within its body wink out one by one. Behavior: The Starwhale's enormous, gentle presence becomes a force of devastation. It no longer flies gracefully β it crashes, rolls, and sweeps with its full mass. The healing aura inverts. It actively seeks out the party's strongest members. Attack: Starlight Aura becomes Void Pulse β all creatures within 30 ft take 1d6 necrotic damage at the start of the Starwhale's turn. Cosmic Wave becomes available every 2 rounds. The fight to free the Starwhale is one of the most important moments in any campaign β the sky itself dims while it is corrupted, and brightens again when freed. Defeating the corruption frees them.
