The Storystreams Bestiary
"The creatures here are not made of flesh and bone β they are made of narrative. Which makes them no less real, and considerably harder to predict."
This file contains the creatures native to the Storystream region β the connective heart of Talestria where pure imagination runs in rivers of gold and silver light. These creatures are born from stories themselves: fragments of narrative given form, echoes that have grown personalities, and ancient spirits who have been tending the flow since the Great Narrator first spoke the world into being.
Encounters in the Storystreams are often stranger than in other regions. Combat may require completing a story rather than breaking a creature's body. Corruption here is especially disturbing β a corrupted story-creature is a narrative gone wrong, a tale trapped in a loop it cannot escape.
Story Wisp
Spirit β The Storystreams
"A tiny point of golden light that follows you around whispering the beginnings of stories it never finishes."
HP: 8 | Dodge: 12 | Mettle: 0 | Corrupted DP: 2 | Attack Bonus: +1
Attack
Narrative Spark (1d4 radiant) β A flash of concentrated story-energy that feels less like being hit and more like suddenly remembering something painful.
Special Ability
Unfinished Thread β The Wisp attaches a glowing thread of narrative to one target. That target has Disadvantage on their next Keen save as their attention is pulled toward the story the Wisp is trying to tell. (Once per battle)
Weakness
Silence β A Silence effect snuffs a Story Wisp's light entirely, reducing it to 1 HP.
Loot
Story Fragment
Corrupted Form
When touched by The Unwritten: The golden point of light turns a flat, dead white β like a star going cold. The whispered story-beginnings become loops: the same sentence repeated, faster and faster, with increasing urgency and no ending. Behavior: The Wisp stops following and starts orbiting, circling targets in tightening spirals while its looping whisper becomes disorienting. Attack: Narrative Spark becomes Broken Loop (psychic damage), and Unfinished Thread becomes Tangled Thread β the target must succeed DC 12 WIS save or lose their Quick Action, trapped trying to follow a story that goes nowhere. Defeating the corruption frees them.
Echo Elemental
Elemental β The Storystreams
"It looks different every time you see it β because it is made of whatever story it absorbed most recently."
HP: 14 | Dodge: 11 | Mettle: 0 | Corrupted DP: 3 | Attack Bonus: +2
Attack
Story Strike (1d6 radiant) β The Elemental replays a fragment of an old battle-story, and the impact of the original blow lands on the nearest creature.
Special Ability
Echo Replay β The Elemental plays back a scene from a story it carries: one ally who watches gains Inspired (+2 to next roll) as the story's courage flows into them. (Once per battle)
Weakness
Shadow β Dark energy disrupts the narrative holding the Elemental together; shadow attacks deal double damage.
Loot
Echo Crystal
Corrupted Form
When touched by The Unwritten: The Elemental's form freezes mid-story β caught in a single scene, replaying the same three seconds forever. Its shape flickers between forms but never completes any of them. The story it carries becomes a trap. Behavior: The Elemental grabs nearby creatures and forces them into the loop β they experience the same fragment repeatedly, losing track of the present. Attack: Story Strike becomes Loop Strike β the target takes damage and must succeed DC 12 WIS save or repeat their last action on their next turn (mechanically, they cannot choose a new action). Echo Replay becomes Echo Trap β pulls one target into a story-fragment for 1 round (they are removed from play, taking 1d4 psychic damage, returning at the start of their next turn). Defeating the corruption frees them.
Narrative Fragment
Construct β The Storystreams
"A piece of a story that broke off and is wandering around looking for its chapter."
HP: 10 | Dodge: 10 | Mettle: 1 | Corrupted DP: 2 | Attack Bonus: +2
Attack
Plot Hook (1d6 piercing) β A sharp, insistent tug β like the feeling of needing to know what happens next, except it physically hurts.
Special Ability
Page Turn β The Fragment skips ahead in time, teleporting 15 ft to any visible space. (Once per battle)
Weakness
Radiant β Pure light resolves the Fragment's confused narrative, dealing double damage.
Loot
Torn Page
Corrupted Form
When touched by The Unwritten: The Fragment's text becomes illegible β dark ink bleeding through the words until nothing is readable. Its edges fray into shadow. Behavior: The Fragment tries to overwrite other creatures' stories β it latches onto a target and begins narrating a wrong version of their life, causing confusion and distress. Attack: Plot Hook becomes False Ending (shadow damage + DC 11 WIS save or the target believes the fight is over and cannot attack on their next turn). Page Turn becomes Redaction β the Fragment teleports and erases the last action of one target (the target's previous turn's Action has no effect retroactively). Defeating the corruption frees them.
Dream Drifter
Spirit β The Storystreams
"It floats between sleeping and waking, and its touch smells like the moment before a good dream."
HP: 16 | Dodge: 13 | Mettle: 0 | Corrupted DP: 3 | Attack Bonus: +2
Attack
Dreamtouch (1d6 psychic) β A gentle brush that sends a vivid, disorienting image through the target's mind.
Special Ability
Gentle Sleep β The Drifter wraps one target in a cocoon of warm dream-light. The target gains the Sleepy condition but also heals 1d4 HP when they wake. (Once per battle)
Weakness
Lightning β A sharp shock jolts the Drifter fully awake, which it hates; lightning attacks stun it for 1 round (it loses its next Action).
Loot
Dream Dust
Corrupted Form
When touched by The Unwritten: The warm dream-light turns cold and blue-grey, like a screen showing static. The Drifter's gentle floating becomes twitchy and erratic β darting forward, freezing, darting again. Its dreams become nightmares. Behavior: Instead of drifting peacefully, the corrupted Drifter actively seeks sleeping or resting creatures and fills their dreams with fear and forgetting. Attack: Dreamtouch becomes Nightmare Grip (psychic + shadow damage), and Gentle Sleep becomes Nightmare Trap β the target is Sleepy for 2 rounds instead of 1, takes 1d4 psychic damage on each skipped turn, and does not heal. Defeating the corruption frees them.
Stream Serpent
Dragon β The Storystreams
"A sinuous ribbon of liquid gold that swims through the Storystreams the way a dragon swims through air β effortlessly, and with opinions."
HP: 22 | Dodge: 14 | Mettle: 1 | Corrupted DP: 4 | Attack Bonus: +3
Attack
Current Lash (1d8 bludgeoning) β The Serpent whips its tail through the current, sending a wave of concentrated story-force crashing into the target.
Special Ability
Story Current β The Serpent redirects the flow of the Storystream around itself, creating a swirling barrier. All ranged attacks targeting creatures within 10 ft of the Serpent have Disadvantage for 1 round. (Once per battle)
Weakness
Cold β Freezing the stream around the Serpent traps it; cold attacks reduce its Dodge by 3 for 1 round.
Loot
Golden Scale
Corrupted Form
When touched by The Unwritten: The Serpent's golden ribbon-body darkens to tarnished bronze, then black. The Storystream around it runs backwards. Dark scales erupt along its length like staples holding a wound closed. Behavior: The Serpent stops swimming with the current and begins swimming against it, actively damming and disrupting the Storystream's flow. Creatures nearby begin to feel their memories blur. Attack: Current Lash becomes Dark Tide (bludgeoning + 1d4 shadow damage), and Story Current becomes Forgetting Current β all creatures within 10 ft must succeed DC 13 WIS save or lose their Quick Action as a recent memory temporarily vanishes. Defeating the corruption frees them.
Spirit Guardian
Spirit β The Storystreams β (Boss-tier)
"It has been tending this section of the Storystream since before anyone can remember β a presence of purpose and warmth that has grown old but never tired."
HP: 28 | Dodge: 14 | Mettle: 1 | Corrupted DP: 6 | Attack Bonus: +4
Attack
Stream Strike (2d6 radiant) β A concentrated beam of Storystream light channeled through the Guardian's ancient form, bright enough to leave afterimages.
Special Ability
Keeper's Blessing β The Guardian channels the Storystream through an ally, healing 2d4 HP and removing one condition. (Once per battle)
Weakness
Shadow β The Unwritten's energy is the only thing that has ever truly threatened a Spirit Guardian; shadow damage bypasses their Mettle.
Loot
Guardian's Light Shard
Corrupted Form
When touched by The Unwritten: The Guardian's luminous form dims to a hollow grey β still recognizably itself but emptied of warmth, like a lantern with no flame. Dark scales grow across its body in patterns that mimic the Keeper sigils it once wore with pride. Its ancient purpose inverts: instead of tending the Stream, it guards the corruption, standing vigil over the darkness as if it were something precious. Behavior: The corrupted Guardian is the most heartbreaking encounter in the Storystreams. It still behaves as a guardian β protective, territorial, methodical β but it is protecting the wrong thing. It will not pursue heroes who retreat. It will only fight those who approach the corrupted section it tends. Attack: Stream Strike becomes Dark Vigil (shadow damage + DC 14 Spirit save or gain 1 Shadow Speck). Keeper's Blessing becomes Corruption Ward β the Guardian heals itself 1d6 HP and regains 1 DP (dark scales growing back). This ability recharges every 3 rounds. Defeating the corruption frees them.
Lorekeeper
Celestial β The Storystreams β (Boss-tier)
"It speaks in the voice of every story ever told at once, and when it looks at you it knows your name β the one you haven't told anyone."
HP: 32 | Dodge: 15 | Mettle: 1 | Corrupted DP: 7 | Attack Bonus: +4
Attack
Word of Power (2d8 radiant) β The Lorekeeper speaks a single word from the oldest stories, and the word strikes with the weight of everything it has ever meant.
Special Ability
True Name β The Lorekeeper speaks a creature's true story-name. A friendly creature gains Advantage on all rolls for 1 round. An enemy creature must succeed on a DC 14 Spirit save or become Charmed for 1 round, overwhelmed by the sound of who they really are. (Once per battle)
Weakness
Silence β A Silence effect strips the Lorekeeper of its voice and therefore its power; it cannot use Word of Power or True Name while silenced.
Loot
Lorekeeper's Quill
Corrupted Form
When touched by The Unwritten: The Lorekeeper's voice, once a chorus of every story, becomes a static hiss β all the stories playing at once but none of them making sense. Its form, usually bright and shifting, locks into a single shape: the last story it was telling before the corruption took hold, frozen and wrong. Dark scales grow across its mouth and eyes like a mask. Behavior: The Lorekeeper stops speaking names and starts erasing them. It drifts toward creatures and attempts to rewrite their identities β not maliciously, but compulsively, as if it can no longer tell the difference between a story and a creature. Attack: Word of Power becomes Word of Forgetting (shadow damage + DC 14 WIS save or the target forgets one of their Calling abilities for 1 round β they cannot use it). True Name becomes False Name β the Lorekeeper speaks a wrong name for the target; on a failed DC 14 Spirit save, the target becomes Confused for 1 round, unsure of who they are. Multi-stage: At DP 3, the Lorekeeper enters a second phase β it begins replaying corrupted stories in the air around it, creating 2 Story Wisp minions (corrupted, HP 4, Dodge 10, +1 attack) that persist until destroyed. Defeating the corruption frees them.
